Olga Mora Mardones, Director of the Library System at the University of Concepción (Chile), has expressed gratitude in a letter sent to the president of UNE for the donation of 111 books by Spanish university presses, covering various fields of knowledge. Mora added that “this excellent donation will be incorporated into the Collection and made available to our university community.”
Specifically, the publishing services of 19 Spanish universities and research centers made the donation to show solidarity with this study center, located in the region most affected by the earthquake of February 27.
The initiative arose within the framework of the 1st Editorial Forum on Hispanic and American Studies and the 1st University Book Fair organized by the Union of Spanish University Presses (UNE) in commemoration of the Bicentennial of Independence, held from April 21 to 23, 2010, at Jaume I University in Castellón.
UNE then considered that, within the framework of this transatlantic meeting between Spain and America, aimed at strengthening the ties that unite these cultures through language and knowledge, Spanish university presses could not remain indifferent to what had happened in Chile following the earthquake that struck the region in February. For this reason, during the organization of the 1st University Book Fair, UNE associates materialized a donation of 111 copies for the bibliographic collection of the Central Library of the University of Concepción.
The 19 universities and research centers whose publishing services participated in this solidarity action were: Universitat Jaume I, Euskaltzaindia, Instituto de Estudios Altoaragoneses, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad de Almería, Universidad de Cádiz, Universidad de Córdoba, Universidad de Jaén, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Universidad de Málaga, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad de Oviedo, Universidad de Salamanca, Universidad de Valladolid, Universidad del País Vasco, UNED, Universidade da Coruña, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Universitat de València.
