As a tribute of remembrance, recognition, and respect to the late UCO Professor of Geography Antonio López Ontiveros, and also as “a special gift, precisely on the day he would have celebrated his birthday, to a person distinguished by his professional and personal career”, the work “The Plaza de la Corredera in Córdoba: functions, meaning and image through the centuries” was presented this morning in the Mudéjar Hall of the Rectorate of the University of Córdoba. It is the last of the books López Ontiveros wrote, in this case jointly with fellow Geography professor José Naranjo Ramírez, who was responsible for commenting on the work. The event was attended by the Vice-Rector for Students and Culture, Manuel Torres; the Dean of Philosophy, Eulalio Fernández; the Director of the Publications Service, Fernando López Mora; and the Director of the Department of Geography and Territorial Sciences, Alfonso Mulero, as well as numerous professors and the family of the late professor.
The volume was conceived with the aim of analysing the entire history of the Plaza de la Corredera from a perspective that had not been addressed until now. In Naranjo’s words, “for many centuries there have been authors who have reflected in their works the historical and architectural aspects of this space, but a comprehensive geographical view of what the existence of this nerve centre has meant for citizens has never been offered”. To this end, it is structured in two parts: one strictly historical, dealing with what took place in the square, and a second, fundamentally geographical, which also includes texts by the many visitors, literary figures, and writers who have shared their perspective on the Corredera.
