UCOPress has just published the AFOR@ handbook, La gestión de la dehesa como bien común, a teaching resource developed by Elena Angón, Jennifer Claros, Miguel Cantarero, Rafael Aguilar and José Perea, researchers in the fields of Animal Production and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Córdoba.
AFOR@ is an educational game designed to develop skills related to economics and livestock management through a participatory activity in which pupils must manage a pastureland area treated as a common resource. The aim is to achieve the greatest possible profit without compromising the ecosystem’s regenerative and sustaining capacity.
Through this experience, students are faced with decisions similar to those that characterise the actual management of extensive livestock systems: the responsible use of resources, the pursuit of profitability, cooperation between stakeholders, sustainability, and the assessment of medium- and long-term consequences.
The handbook published by UCOPress provides clear guidance on incorporating games into the classroom and helps to consolidate the use of active teaching methods at university level, particularly in courses focusing on the economics of livestock production, farm management and the sustainability of the dehesa.
