UCOPress, the University of Córdoba’s publishing house, has published a scientific atlas containing 274 previously unpublished images of fish testicles and ovaries, a fundamental resource in the fields of reproductive biology and comparative anatomy. The work, the result of years of research, provides a detailed overview of the structure and ultrastructure of the gonads using optical and electron microscopy techniques.
The visual material is drawn entirely from studies carried out at the Department of Anatomy and Pathological Anatomy at the University of Córdoba and the SCAI Microscopy Service. The samples analysed form part of various research lines of the BIO 218 Group of the Regional Government of Andalusia, led by Professor Alfonso Blanco Rodríguez, PhD in Veterinary Medicine.
The scarcity of specialist publications in this field makes this atlas an essential reference for researchers, lecturers and professionals involved in fish biology. The work systematically documents all stages of spermatogenesis, from the initial germ cells to the formation of spermatozoa, as well as the organisation of Sertoli and Leydig cells. In parallel, it describes the morphology of the ovary and the development of ovarian follicles, highlighting the complexity of the zona pellucida, which is key in species with external fertilisation.
