Architectural Heritage and Identity: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Architectural heritage is, more than a collection of individual buildings, a network of meanings, memories, and knowledge that shapes our relationship with time and space. Today, discussing heritage involves moving beyond the static view that reduced it to passive contemplation and the material conservation of monuments, in order to recognize it as an organic whole -a living system where diverse disciplines, methodologies, and sensibilities converge in the effort to understand its cultural, social, and symbolic dimensions-.
Reflecting on architectural heritage, as proposed in Architectural heritage and Identity: interdisciplinary perspectives, entails initiating a dialogue between past and present, the tangible and the intangible, the preservation of collective memory and the challenges of the future. From contributions that explore the role of new technologies in the humanities to proposals that address emerging forms of heritage, the book demonstrates how heritage studies are being renewed, exploring horizons in which architecture becomes a subject of knowledge, identity, and transformation. All of this crystallizes into an intellectual exercise that approaches the multiple dimensions of heritage not as a clearly defined and objectified construct, but as a plural phenomenon. Thus, although the chapters that make up this publication speak from diverse geographies and academic traditions, they all form a shared roadmap marked by a common concern: the need to understand heritage as a living and ever-changing legacy.
