The book, published by UCOPress and Fudepa, offers a fresh perspective on the Cordoba-born painter as a socially conscious artist and examines his relationship with the working class and his connection to the intellectual movements of the time.
Yesterday, the Mudéjar Hall at the University of Córdoba’s Rectorate hosted the presentation of the book “Julio Romero de Torres. Distinguished Worker, Eminent Laborer of Art,” a work published by UCOPress Editorial Universidad de Córdoba and the Foundation for the Development of the Peoples of Andalusia (FUDEPA) that highlights the Cordovan painter’s most social, critical, and socially engaged side.
This publication brings together the papers, an exhibition catalog, and the proceedings of a conference held in 2024 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the artist’s birth, with the aim of ensuring that the analyses, debates, and insights generated at that event endure over time and serve as a reference for future studies.
Through various perspectives, the book explores the most socially and intellectually engaged aspects of Julio Romero de Torres, moving beyond the clichés that have shaped how he has been interpreted. The book analyzes his historical context, his family and cultural environment, his relationship with the working class and the Casa del Pueblo in Córdoba, as well as his connection to prominent figures in the thought and arts of his time and to the social and intellectual movements of the era, thus offering a renewed interpretation of the painter as a committed artist linked to the transformations of Spain during his time.
The book launch was attended by the acting rector of the University of Córdoba, Manuel Torralbo, and Pablo Sánchez Villegas, a member of the Fudepa board of trustees and secretary for Historical and Democratic Memory at UGT Andalucía. Specifically, the book was presented by historian Manuel García and the former director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Fuensanta García, in a discussion moderated by Fudepa’s manager and the publication’s coordinator, Josefa Castillejo.
The acting rector of the University of Córdoba emphasized that the book “offers a fresh perspective on Julio Romero de Torres, an approach that allows us to better understand the artist, grasp the complexity of his legacy, and recognize how his profound view of reality also helped project Córdoba’s identity beyond its borders.”
Torralbo also emphasized that the book “is the result of a collective effort that demonstrates the capacity for collaboration between public and social institutions around culture, memory, and critical thinking,” and expressed confidence that readers “will find in its pages not only a more nuanced approach to the painter’s figure, but an invitation to continue examining his legacy from new perspectives,” since “knowing our cultural history is, ultimately, a better understanding of who we are and where we want to move as a society.”
For his part, the trustee of Fudepa and secretary of Historical and Democratic Memory for UGT Andalusia emphasized during the event that “Julio Romero de Torres was much more than just one of the great names in Andalusian painting; he was also a man deeply connected to the social reality of his time and to the life of the working class in Córdoba.”
In this regard, Pablo Sánchez defended the importance of initiatives like this one to “preserve the democratic and cultural memory of Andalusia, introducing new generations to key figures in our history from perspectives that have often remained in the background.” For this reason, he reaffirmed FUDEPA’s commitment to culture and the dissemination of history, noting that “Andalusia needs to continue building spaces for reflection and knowledge where culture, memory, and social rights go hand in hand.”
Exhibition at the University
To mark the presentation of the work, the University of Córdoba’s Rector’s Office has revived the exhibition that was held in 2024, which at the time toured various centers and faculties of the university in collaboration with Fudepa and the Córdoba Provincial Council.
The exhibition, which will be open until May 17, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., offers a unique perspective on the renowned Cordoban painter, going beyond his pictorial work. This exhibition explores his most intimate side, highlighting his social and cultural involvement through images, photographs, press clippings, and other materials that reveal lesser-known aspects of his life, offering the public a new opportunity to engage with the artist’s figure and work from this fresh perspective.
The new publication, part of a collaboration agreement signed between the University of Córdoba and Fudepa, represents a new contribution to the study and dissemination of Julio Romero de Torres’ legacy, consolidating the publishers’ commitment to the cultural and heritage memory of Andalusia.
